The Spot
Tragedy strikes the Spot

April 12, 2001 — The Spot is gone.

Flannery’s all-digital recording studio, The Spot, was completely destroyed in a freak accident last week.

A tow-truck was loading a car at a residence just uphill from the Spot, when the tow chain broke, sending the unmanned vehicle careening out of control. And as luck would have it, the car hit directly at the center of the studio.

The car, a 1985 Lincoln Town Car, struck the front door, throwing it back into the structure with incredible force. It took out the wall dividing the recording area from the control rool, and even pushed the control room countertop through the back wall.

Almost all of the equipment, including state of the art Pro Tools recording gear, digital mastering facilities, microphones and effects units were destroyed. Estimated damage to the building’s contents alone was nearly $50,000.00.

“It just makes you feel like crying,” guitarist Jimmy Flannery said. “Especially when you think of all the money and hard work that went into building The Spot.”

An insurance adjuster from the towing service was scheduled to survey the damage this week. The truck’s driver said that his company’s insurance policy would cover all of the damages.

Once the band is compensated for the damage, they say they will rebuild the Spot at a different location.

“Oh, The Spot will be back,” said vocalist Carlen Dixon. “It may take us a while, but we’re not gonna let this stop us. We’ll just have to start all over again.”

What WAS The Spot?

When they first began playing music together, Jimmy and Carlen often visited a place in the hills near Jimmy’s home, where they would write music, talk and discuss matters happening in their lives.

This place, with its incredible mountain view, soon came to be known to the two of them as, simply, the “spot.”

The “spot” was a place where they could exchange ideas and try to make sense out of life.

So, years later, when they decided to build a recording studio, they remembered all the good times and good music created there.

Construction for the studio began on May 27th, 1999. And it seemed only appropriate to call the new studio “The Spot.”

Although the studio was destroyed, it will once again be a place to exchange ideas, write and record songs, laugh and PARTY!!!
